How does a plant emerge through the soil?

Do you see what is called the, “apical hook”? This demonstrates that a plant doesn’t simply push its new fragile leaves up through the soil. It actually forms an “elbow” that it uses to make its way safely and firmly out into the world. The delicate leaves follow behind once the path has been secured. I use this motion as an exercise for seniors, pushing and swinging our elbows through the air, imagining that we are pushing through the soil.
